At The Greetland Academy we pride ourselves on the excellent standard of school meals we produce each day whilst meeting the Government’s guidelines on menu setting. Nutrition and a healthy balance are key factors in our menu development. Alongside this, ensuring the children enjoy their meals whilst balancing Government guidelines, personal preferences and seasonal options is a challenge we rise to.

We hope that all parents will agree that our school meals service is something we should value very highly. We are constantly sourcing local and organic produce; listening to pupil and parent requests, as well as complying with government legislation.

In brief, Government guidelines on menu setting include: 

  • high-quality meat, poultry or oily fish
  • fruit and vegetables
  • bread, other cereals and potatoes

There can’t be:

  • drinks with added sugar, crisps, chocolate or sweets in school meals and vending machines
  • more than 2 portions of deep-fried, battered or breaded food a week

As many of you will be aware this is a national drive to be more proactive about national obesity worries.

All our meals are cooked on site, in both Key Stage kitchens. Most dishes are produced and cooked using local fresh ingredients without the need for added salt or fat. Some of our foodstuffs, from our local suppliers may not be classed as home-cooked, for example vegetarian mince, soya pieces and quorn products. However these have been selected and sourced for their excellent health benefits, being packed full of heart healthy protein and are used to produce our non-dairy, vegetarian dishes. Government guidelines see these super foods as a good source of nutrition and we produce at least 3 dishes containing them each week.

Most of our bread products contain 50% whole-wheat flour which is an excellent source of fibre and keeps our children fuller for longer (our most popular dish, Pizza, also has its base homemade using this flour). Our bread is freshly delivered each day from local bakers.

Nikki Thompson, our Catering Manager, has a personal goal to produce and deliver the healthiest, most nutritious food possible, with lots of choice on each day’s menu. It’s about choosing the best ingredients and turning them into something tasty and healthy for everyone to enjoy!

In addition the school meals provision ensures:

• Menu card system to ensure choice is available for all children, in order that later sittings are not disadvantaged

• Kitchen staff and mid-day supervisors regularly attend food hygiene and health and safety training

• Kitchen staff and mid-day supervisors have all been given the opportunity to attend First Aid Training

• All our kitchens are subject to annual health and safety checks
